P & R Specialty, Inc. is a Piqua, Ohio manufacturer of high quality fiberboard spools, plastic spools, plywood reels, and wire basket spools for the wire and cable industry. The company was founded in 1982 by the late George Blankenship and has grown consistently since its inception. Once located in a small garage on Route 36 west of town the company’s growth has taken them to their present location at 1835 W. High St. where P & R Specialty’s two buildings total 100,000 sq. ft. From there the company supports some of the largest wire manufacturers in the world.
The largest sector for the company’s recent growth is its state of the art injection molding facility which houses presses ranging from 100 ton up to 750 ton. The company maintains its own tool shop and has a full time mold making and die making staff that is responsible for mold development, design, machining, and maintenance. But P & R does more than run its own plastic spool molds. Many custom molds are run in house and maintained by the staff as part of our dedication to our customers regardless of size. At the same time P & R continues to look for opportunities to increase this side of the business as customers are always looking for lighter weight close tolerance spools for their products. In plastics weight, strength, and performance are everything. By lowering weight and improving strength and performance the company can help end users reduce their costs.
P & R Specialty realizes the recent change in the world economic condition and has aggressively been pursuing ways to reduce its own costs and at the same time reduce scrap and waste which in turn will help the environment. P & R is now able to offer its customers a totally recyclable wire basket spool. The end user pays off their supplier’s wire and is left only with an empty spool made entirely of copper coated wire which can then be used for material for steel reclamation. In addition, the company recently installed a new dust collection system which works hand in hand with a new wood grinder. This equipment will allow P & R to reduce wood waste from its fiberboard spools and plywood reels into a manageable form that companies will take to use as either animal bedding or fuel to power their own generators for heat and electricity. Eliminating waste is just one way the company has been able to maintain a secure business position. Another way in which P & R has been able to be a leader in its industry has been to position itself as a single source supplier to its many customers. Ninety-five percent of all items the company produces are directly or indirectly consumed by the wire industry. In addition to its spool and reel offerings the company also produces ancillary items such as wire wipes and float rings as well as a wide variety of steel washers and arbor plates for manufacturers of nailed wooden reels.
